Should you try the “Life of Pi”?
I’m all for expanding your mind. It’s good for you, right? Makes you more creative or something. Well “Life of Pi” is certainly one of those books that makes you wonder if you need to be smoking dope to understand. Written by Yann Martel, it’s gotten wildly popular, probably because it’s so weird. But is it good?I didn’t love this book. I was glad, in the end, that I’d read it. I did call the person who recommended it to me part way through with a bunch of questions, “Am I really supposed to believe in a talking tiger? Is this all some kind of weird dream? Were you taking LSD when you suggested this book to me to read?” She (wisely) replied, “Just keep reading”. I am a sheep so I did just keep reading. Did it all make sense in the end? No. But then again, does everything have to make sense? You’ll like this book if you enjoy exotic tales and you’re not afraid to delve into the totally bizarre. If you’re looking for a fun book to read on the beach - DON’T take this book. It’s not relaxing, it’s not funny and it’s not particularly uplifting. But it will give you something to talk about for sure.
