“Talk Pretty” will get you laughing

March 13th, 2008 by Biblioholic

“Me Talk Pretty One Day” is a good example of David Sedaris’ peculiar brand of humor. His books are made up of his signature short essays on his life. Pick up the book, read 3 chapters at random and see what you think.

Sedaris isn’t for everyone. Some people would find him incredibly crass. His homosexuality does work its way into his books, though usually as an aside, not really the topic of many of his essays. He tells his family stories with an honesty that borders on brutality. You wonder how he ever manages to go to family reuinions.

I have a dark sense of humor and I find some of Sedaris’ essays to be laugh out loud funny. Teenagers particularly seem to appreciate his irreverance (though some material may not be appropriate, read it for yourself please).

His other books include “Naked” and “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim” proving that his titles are as unusual as he is.

Capitalizing on his success, his sister Amy Sedaris has a book called, “I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence ” which is a recipe book/bizarre craft manual/hilarious commentary. This book would be the perfect gift for a woman who hates Martha Stewart.

If you like David Sedaris’ brand of humor, check out Laurie Notaro who write similar essays from a female perspective.
