You won’t find “Escape” relaxing
I’m all for reading a nice fluffy beach book occasionally to break things up. “Escape” by Carolyn Jessup is NOT that kind of read. The true story of a woman’s experiences in a polygamous cult you will be too shocked and horrified to put the book down.
Carolyn was married at 18 to an olderĀ man who already had 3 other wives. The story of her struggles with the other wives, all of their children (she eventually had 8, her husband had over 50 children!) and her religion are clearly and painstaking told. The writing isn’t all that great, but the story is compelling and will quickly capture you. Why would anyone marry an old guy who already had multiple wives? Why would these women want to have his children? Why so many children? Who can afford to have 50+ kids? The book slowly unravels all of these mysteries.
If you like this book, you will also like “Under the Banner of Heaven” by Jon Krakauer (one of my favorite authors) about Mormonism.
