Dumb Title, Great Book
I recently finished “Hinds Feet on High Places” by Hannah Hunard. I will admit that it’s the weirdest title of a book that I can think of (even weirder than “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” which at least made sense to me). Title aside, it was an EXCELLENT book and a quick read.
This book is Christian based and called “an allegory” which I will re-categorize (for those of you who don’t know what an allegory is) as a Christian myth or Christian fable. It is a work of fiction but it reads very much like an ancient story that still has truth in it today. The characters names, such as Much-Afraid, only add to the fable/myth-like quality.
In spite of the weird title and character names, I enjoyed it thoroughly! I saw myself at nearly every turn and I found it doing an excellent job of explaining why following God can sometimes lead to more hardship instead of less. Being a person who would prefer to avoid pain, I could completely relate. I want to be faithful, but I also have a strong urge to be comfortable and lazy!
I also recommend “Shattered Dreams” by Larry Crabb if you’re struggling with the idea that our lives are sometimes crazy hard, even when we think we have strong faith. I also recommend “When God Doesn’t Answer Your Prayers” by Gary Sittser. Both are works of non-fiction but they’re both excellent and readable.
For kids/teens, you can’t beat the “Chronicles of Narnia” series by CS Lewis beginning with “The Magician’s Nephew”. These are just fun books to read with any child or young teen no matter what your religious preference.
