Get Chills from “Mephisto Club”

May 19th, 2008 by Biblioholic

Tess Gerritsen’s “The Mephisto Club” is a quick and easy read for those who love mysteries/suspense novels. Gerritsen goes a bit “DaVinci Code” with this novel that hints at a biblical conspiracy about “The Watchers” - traditional serial killer types or children of an ancient union between fallen angels and humans. If you like James Patterson novels (particulary his strange ones like “When the Wind Blows”), you’ll probably enjoy this as well. You’ll also draw similarities between Gerritsen’s coroner - Maura, and Patricia Cornwell’s famous coroner Kay Scarpetta. Both have a tough exterior and brilliant mind, but have a softness inside that makes them human and lovable.

The ending was a little weak, but you can’t expect too much from this genre. Warning: there’s an exhausting amount of talk about satanic rituals in this book. If you grow easily weary by such things, skip this one. If you want something similar, you’ll want to read “Hideaway” by Dean Koontz.
