Feeling “Fearless”?

July 3rd, 2008 by Biblioholic

“Fearless Fourteen” is the latest in Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. The series is most notable for its characters, Stephanie is a bounty hunter in Trenton, NJ juggling two hot guys, a passion for greasy food and her gun-toting grandma.

If that doesn’t intrigue you enough to read “One for the Money”, I don’t know what will. The books are largely romance/suspense with a hint of mystery thrown in (don’t count on it to be a deep mystery, your cat can probably predict the endings of most of these books). They’re all character driven and Evanovich does have a gift for drawing some hilarious characters and that’s how she’s managed to fill 14 volumes.

The sex appeal of these books was what largely drew people to them. Her first 10 ranged in sexual tension from 2 or 3 all the way up to a near perfect 10. That’s starting to settle a bit as we get higher up into the number of books in the series. You just can’t keep that kind of tension going. Stephanie seems to have picked her man, which results in a bit of a let down.

If you need a good beach book, this is definitely worth taking. Even if you haven’t read any former Plum books, you’ll probably enjoy this one. If you’re looking for a good mystery/suspense novel, pass this one by and pick up something like “See Jane Run” by Joy Fielding.
