What Diane's Reading

Standoff at “High Noon”

Nora Roberts writes some pretty decent romance trilogies (such as “Born in Fire”, “Born in Ice”, “Born in Shame”). She’s since spun off into writing “romantic thrillers” and “High Noon” is one of those. It probably shouldn’t be considered a thriller, but it does have a dose of suspense.

If you’re a die hard mystery fan, “High Noon” is probably not going to cut it for you. But if you want a quick read that’s got an unrealistic, but fun, love story with good characters who get tangled up with a psychopath, you’ll probably enjoy “High Noon”.

Roberts always manages to make her characters likeable, even if they don’t ring very true. “High Noon” is no exception. You’ve got Phoebe, the heroine, who’s a tough, but gorgeous, police negotiator who’s had a tough life but still manages to stay soft with her mother and her precocious daughter. The hero, Duncan, is a brilliant businessman, former tough guy and previous lottery winner. How could they not fall in love?

For you die hard mystery fans, try Patricia Cornwell or Sue Grafton. If you want a laugh with your mystery, check out Carl Hiaasen’s “Skinny Dip” or Janet Evanovich’s “Metro Girl” or “One for the Money”.
