Sweet and Sappy “Love”

August 7th, 2008 by Biblioholic

Cecilia Ahern’s “P.S. I Love You” is sweet, tear jerking and definitely for chicks. I don’t know any man who could make it all the way through this book without lapsing into a sugar induced coma.Still, if you’re a lady and you’re looking for a beach book, this is a fine read as long as you don’t mind crying a bit. It’s essentially the story of a young married couple where the husband has a brain tumor and dies, leaving his wife Holly behind. She struggles to get out of bed, avoids getting a job and generally goes through the process of grief. Her family is appropriately dysfunctional but funny. Her friends are all stuck in the “lets go out and get drunk every night” mindset of the late 20’s working professionals.

Does it have great meaning? No. It’s no “Walk to Remember” or “Tuesdays with Morrie”. In spite of the subject matter, it stays fairly lighthearted. If you can tolerate Holly’s complete floundering about in despair, you’ll probably enjoy the story. If you find lost or grief stricken main characters to be upsetting or pathetic, I’d find a different book to read.

Thanks to Donna for suggesting this book! It was quick and easy to read.
