“Rock” On
“Mama Rock’s Rules” by Rose Rock (AKA Chris Rock’s Mommy) is not a book I would normally expect to pick up or like. But somehow it caught my attention (perhaps O magazine reviewed it) and I decided to take a chance.Personally, I like a good parenting book. I know, lots of people hate advice books and I don’t blame them. Especially when it comes to relational advice, you can often get mired in some weirdo’s opinions without any facts or real information to back it up. Suddenly, you get snowed into thinking that you should talk to your kids like they’re adults, or sit face to face with your spouse sharing each others breathing. Fortunately, you usually come out of those stupors and realize that you’re acting like an idiot and just go back to doing what you do and learning along the way.
Is Mama Rock telling you anything you didn’t already know? Probably not. What she does have is a simple book giving not only common sense advice, but backing it up with practical applications. How do I get my kid interested in reading? Of course, I know it’s important, but it’s hard with someone who doesn’t particularly WANT to read (how it’s possible that I have a child in my life that doesn’t like to read is a huge mystery in my life). Mama Rock suggests subscribing that kid to a magazine that they really like or getting them graphic novels or comic books from the library. It’s not earth-shattering, but I hadn’t thought of it.
If you want some practical advice or just to know more about the home where Chris Rock grew up, you’ll enjoy this book.
