I love Erma
This may place me in the wrong era, but I love Erma Bombeck’s writing. She is hysterical and still resonates with moms today. If you’ve ever wondered how your child can fail to remember to take out the trash even though you’ve reminded him 500 times but still can remember that his sister got a bigger piece of birthday cake 12 years ago, then you’ll like Erma too.I recently read two of hers, “All I Know About Animal Behavior I Learned in Loehmann’s Dressing Room” and “Forever, Erma
“. “All I Know” was not my favorite, it was a newer book (not a collection of her articles) and while it was still funny in parts, it didn’t have me laughing out loud. “Forever Erma” had me laughing and crying and remembering just why my Mom always loved reading Erma Bombeck.
“If Life Is a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?” is another great Bombeck read. All of Erma Bombeck is going to sound a bit dated, she doesn’t talk extensively about web sites and cell phones, but the truths of raising kids, gossipy neighbors, embarrasing yourself at cocktail parties, those are all timeless.
I’ve always thought of D.L. Stewart as the male Erma Bombeck so if you’re looking for a funny book for a Dad, try something like “Fathers Are People Too” or “The man in the blue flannel pajamas: The least bad of D. L. Stewart
“.
