Not for girls? “Doubt”ful
Few things get me to read a book faster than, “You probably won’t like this book Diane. It’s a ‘guy book’.” Frank had heard that about “The River of Doubt” so he asked me to read it and see if it was a book that only a man could enjoy.I’m happy to report that anyone with an interest in history, presidents, the Amazon or who enjoys National Geographic magazine, would probably enjoy “The River of Doubt
” by Candice Millard. But I will admit that the audience probably skews more male than female. If your Dad loves history/adventure, this would be a great Father’s Day gift!
While it starts off a bit slow, this non-fiction account of Teddy Roosevelt’s insatiable spirit of exploration quickly gains momentum. Roosevelt’s trust in his friends to plan and execute a complicated journey, and his foolish decision to change their expedition at the last minute to uncharted waters of the Amazon gives us a fascinating glimpse of his complex and charismatic personality.
You will develop a great sympathy for the Brazilian commander, Rondon, trying to keep a VIP alive through an area teeming with hostility while carrying boxes full of gourmet mustard (and other non-essentials)! From the weeks long overland journey to the harrowing trip down-river, you’ll have a hard time setting this book down.
And you’ll definitely gain more respect for the Amazon and the wildlife that live there (warning to guys, there’s a parasitic fish talked about in this book that you will NEVER forget).
