What Diane's Reading

Christmas Giving Guide 2009

Is it that time already? Whether you’ve got one reader to buy for or 10 (or you just want to buy 10 books for yourself), here are some suggestions that should appeal to even the pickiest of readers.

Let’s start with the pickiest of picky – the pre-teen/teenage boy. I know, it seems hopeless. But don’t give up! Suzanne Collins has written two GREAT books that will appeal to almost any guy, especially young men who love reality shows and video games – “The Hunger Games” and its sequel “Catching Fire“. For a younger pre-teen boy, try “The Kingdom Keepers” which takes place in Disney World (just be ready for them to whine that they want to GO to Disney World).

Teen girls, who can also be hard to buy for (you don’t want to buy them trashy romance novels but don’t really want to buy them books of rape, murder, etc.), would be changed by  ”Live to Tell” about a young woman’s true struggle to survive during the Rwanda genocide. “The Book Thief” would be a good fiction choice.

Anyone with an interest in history and/or presidents would enjoy either “River of Doubt” about Teddy Roosevelt’s journey through uncharted territory on the Amazon or “Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure” about a fun cross country trip that Truman took after his presidency.

Outdoorsman would like any of Tim Cahill’s books including “Lost in my own Backyard“. Or for even more adventurous types, pick up “Better Off” and inspire them to go be live like the Amish.

Two great books that cross the gender barrier this year and would appeal equally to men AND women (a rare thing in books) are “Water for Elephants” (fiction) and “Three Cups of Tea” (non-fiction).  “The Reader” may also work. It’s steamy scenes may actually appeal to men most of all.

And for the ladies in your life, try “Wish You Well” by Baldacci, “Cure for Modern Life” or “Names my Sisters Call Me“. Or if she likes fluffy romances, go for the “Born In” series by Nora Roberts. If she needs a laugh and has kids, definitely give her “Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay” or the sequel “Naptime Is the New Happy Hour“.
