I was lukewarm on Susan Konig’s last book so I thought I’d give her another chance with “I Wear the Maternity Pants in This Family“. Okay, the graphic on the front of the book caught my eye. Anyway, I liked it, but probably wouldn’t buy it for my best pregnant friend (unless she had 3 older kids and was suddenly expecting a new surprise baby).

I would get my best pregnant friend, “From Here to Maternity: The Education of a Rookie Mom“, which I found more amusing. Konig’s books are real, which is great and they’re not all silly stories. Some of them have a point and some of them are touching. I just didn’t feel the depth of humor that I was looking for. Worth a read, but not going to impress the pants off of you (unless, of course, they’re your old maternity pants, in which case, maybe those will just fall off – here’s hoping!).

Kudos go to Donna for telling me about it. And it will especially appeal tonew moms or mothers with young children, as the book centers on a group of women who come together right at that time in their lives.

The group of women decides to try their hand at writing and they slowly draw closer together as their writing reveals more and more about their lives. None of them are entirely flat characters, they all have a depth that is surprising and moving.

I hesitate to call this “chick lit” because it is more meaningful than some, but this is so clearly a book by a woman for women, that I think it fits that category best.

Whether you have a group of close friends or not, whether you’ve always dreamed of writing your life story or not, there’s something for you in this book.

I love Nora Ephron movies so I expected to enjoy “Heartburn”. It was supposed to be a funny book about a woman who writes cookbooks going through the breakup of her marriage. Some of you will say that should have been my first clue. Who writes a funny book about divorce? Well, actually Elizabeth Berg does. Carl Hiaasen writes funny books about homicidal spouses. So I think it’s fair to say that it’s possible.

But “Heartburn” falls short. The lead character is interesting, but lacks the depth of Bridget Jones (who is fairly shallow). Her situation is complicated by the fact that she is hugely pregnant, but so little is made of it that you keep forgetting all about that as you’re reading.

Check out “Open House” by Elizabeth Berg or “Skinny Dip” by Carl Hiaasen if you’re in the mood for a funny breakup book. Nora is obviously meant for Hollywood.

Instead of examining a complex sister relationship, it’s focused around childhood friends and how their relationship changes in high school and eventually ends.Naturally, it’s re-established in adulthood around a sudden tragedy (which adds a touch of mystery to her normal chick lit formula). It’s too bad that the romantic element is highly predictable.

Still, that doesn’t make it bad. If you’ve ever had a best friend and especially if that friendship has ever grown apart or come to an abrupt halt, this story will resonate with you. And it’s light enough to make for a good beach read.

The underlying principal has a lot in common with “Confessions of a Shopaholic“except that it’s an older woman who’s forced to come to terms with her years of unconscious spending. She finds proof that her husband will be asking for a divorce and realizes that she has no hope of surviving on her own financially.

Her housekeeper urges her to join the local Penny Pinchers club that meets at a local library to swap coupons and share Costco memberships.

This would make a fine beach book as it’s very superficial and predictable, but still fun to read. The characters are clever and funny and it’s a quick read. Who knows, maybe you’ll even pick up a few tips on how to save some money.

It centers around the main characters quest to define herself as more than just a single woman and what’s happening to her friends while she’s off on this “spirit quest”.It has charming moments and a few poignant ones. The characters at least get points for being a little different from the series (though the main character is a writer). And the love situations are as complex as you’d like them to be.

The only drawbacks are that it’s a touch formulaic and lacking in emotional depth. This is a great beach book for the upcoming summer season, you won’t be sobbing in the sand and just might snicker a few times.

Just make sure and tell your husband that it’s fiction.

Fern is a down on her luck wannabe singer who magically lands a job as an assistant to a world famous opera singer. Naturally there is an attraction, but will she ever tell him of her dreams? If you’re gagging already, this is not the book for you. Yes, it follows a formula. Yes, there’s a bit too much “American Idol”. Yes, our heroine has a sick nephew that she’s trying to take care of (awwww). And yes, the hero has a tortured past that is almost too over the top.

But hey, it’s chick lit, what did you expect?

Does it work for the beach? Sure! Will it make you smile at least once? Probably. Will it remind you of Bridget Jones? At least once or twice (in a good way).

So give it a whirl, if you’re chick lit inclined. It’s only a few hours of your life and you needed the distraction anyway.

If you’re going to read one historical novel about the holocaust in Poland, I would recommend “The Zookeeper’s Wife“, which was really phenomenal AND based on true facts. “The Book Thief” is another great fiction choice.“Kommandant” is not as strong because it relies on a love triangle to move the plot forward. The main character is not as strong as what you see in “Thief” and the story lacks the complexity of either of the other two books. Still, if you’re in the mood for a historical romance/intrigue, this is worth a quick read. And what it does capture quite well is the ability to love someone that you really should dislike.

A woman struggles with her ex-husband and former mother-in-law and comes to grips with her own mother-in-law tendencies as her son brings home an inappropriate girlfriend. It’s not high literature and it’s not the funniest book ever, but it was easy to read and would appeal to many chick lit fans. And if you have a mother-in-law from you-know-where, this book would probably cheer you up. Of course, I don’t have that problem, so I couldn’t relate :^)

If you’re looking for a chick lit novel with a bit more depth, I’d recommend “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” (read my review) or “The Elegant Gathering of White Snows” (read my review).

Elizabeth Berg writes beautiful novels that are perfect for the women in your life (I suspect that most of her novels would not really resonate with guys). “The Art of Mending” is no exception. At it’s core, this is a novel about family relationships, particularly of the mother-daughter variety. How we get along, how we remember our youth, how we find “truth” when it comes to our families and our childhood.

And as usual, Berg tells the story well and keeps out of the way.

I didn’t love it as much as “Open House“, my personal favorite Berg novel, but it was a good read and a fast one. If you like Elizabeth Berg, you’d also enjoy “An Elegant Gathering of White Snows” by Kris Radish.
